The clip that set it off was filmed on a street in Gangnam, the Seoul district the song is named after, and posted on TikTok on 5 October 2026 under the caption "gangnam style in gangnam". By 23 October it showed about 17.8 million views and 2.9 million likes, with the sound listed as a Gangnam Style version on TikTok. Copies followed in other cities, and from 12 October creators began posting AI versions made from photos, many of them swapping in film characters.
